what are the White.CustomControls good for

What are the White.CustomControls like WhiteButton, WhiteImage etc. good for. All they seem to do is subclassing the WPF control and exposing a custom AutomationPeer. When would I need them?

This is a cool idea. But if I understand it right I would have to use these Controls instead of the WPF controls in my UI. I would not tolerate a dependency on White for my application for the sole purpose of testing. Is this actually done in actual business applications? Is it thought to be done that way?

You are right about the dependency. If you think about it you already have dependency of UIAutomation on your business app because you are using all its peers. Its fair to trust MS more than White.
